Meet Dr. Clement

Dr. Clement currently serves as the Ernest McFarland Citizen’s Chair in Education at Northern Arizona University.

A Life of Service in Education

Dr. Clement served nine years as the superintendent of Flowing Wells School District in Tucson, Arizona. Following his retirement in 2013, Dr. Clement was appointed to the Ernest McFarland Citizen’s Chair in Education by the dean of the College of Education at Northern Arizona University. In this endowed, full-time faculty position, Dr. Clement is responsible for teaching and advocating for education throughout Arizona and the nation.

Dr. Clement has presented and been published nationally in the areas of after-school programs, marketing, customer service and legendary teaching. In his 38 year career, Dr. Clement has also served as a special education teacher, high school assistant principal, junior high principal, high school principal, and assistant superintendent.

Dr. Clement earned his doctorate in Educational Administration at the University of Arizona, his master’s degree in Educational Administration at the University of Nevada, and his bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Clement has been a leader in developing and expanding after-school opportunities for all students. Since 2001, he has written and received over $8 million in 21st Century Community Learning Center grants, which allowed the district to develop and sustain nationally recognized after-school programs for all students along with expanding adult literacy programs for school district parents. In 2009, he wrote and was awarded a Full-Service Community Schools grants for approximately $2.5 million.

Preparing students to be future ready has also been a high priority for Dr. Clement. As superintendent, he initiated a number of programs designed to increase graduation and college entrance rates including expansion of career technology courses, developing a strong partnership with IBM Tucson, creating a robotics program, and launching the 100% initiative.

Dr. Clement is also active in his community and serves as the chair for the American Heart Association and on the board of the Flowing Wells Extension Programs, Inc., along with being a life-long member of the Tucson Optimist Club. Dr. Clement is a member of the Flowing Wells Neighborhood Coalition and served on the presentation team which helped the community win the All-American City Award in 2007.

During his tenure, Dr. Clement has been selected to receive the ASA Distinguished Administrator Award, ASA Arizona National Superintendent of the Year, National Community Education Association Distinguished Administrator Award, and the Arizona Music Educators Association Advocacy Award.
